Conservation Action Programs

Our conservation action programs are designed to move beyond awareness and into measurable impact. These initiatives focus on protecting reef health at every level—from direct intervention on the reef, to coastal restoration, to global data contribution. Each program is guided by science, executed with care, and structured so that participants can engage meaningfully while maintaining the highest standards of environmental responsibility.

Our Priority Action Programs include:

  • Crown of Thorns Population Control

  • Beach Cleanups

  • Dive Against Debris

  • Mangrove Transplanting

  • Coral Cultivation

CROWN OF THORN POPULATION CONTROL

The Crown of Thorns starfish is one of the most significant natural threats to coral reefs when populations become unbalanced. Feeding on live coral tissue, outbreaks can rapidly degrade large reef areas if left unmanaged. The Foundation conducts targeted control efforts using trained teams who safely identify and treat COT starfish through precise injection methods, preventing further coral predation without harming surrounding marine life. These efforts are carried out with strict protocols to ensure diver safety and zero reef contact. By actively managing outbreaks, this program plays a critical role in preserving coral cover and maintaining the ecological balance of Rainbow Reef.

BEACH CLEANUPS

Healthy reefs begin on land. The Foundation’s beach cleanup initiatives address marine debris at its source—before it can enter the ocean and impact coral ecosystems. Working in partnership with local villages and schools, these cleanups remove plastics, fishing materials, and other waste while fostering environmental awareness within the community. Educational components are integrated into each event, helping to build long-term stewardship among the next generation. By combining direct action with outreach, this program strengthens both environmental and community resilience.

DIVE AGAINST DEBRIS

By participating in PADI's Dive Against Debris program we effectively extend our regional cleanup efforts below the surface, targeting waste that has already reached the reef environment. Conducted under strict buoyancy and reef protection protocols, these dives focus on the careful removal of debris without disturbing coral or marine life. Items recovered are documented,  and reported to global databases, contributing to a broader understanding of marine pollution patterns. This combination of immediate reef protection and long-term data collection ensures that each dive contributes to both local impact and global solutions.

MANGROVE TRANSPLANTING

Mangroves are essential to the health of coral reef ecosystems, acting as nurseries for marine life and natural buffers against coastal erosion. Mangrove forests, while not located immediately "on" the Rainbow Reef, are integrally tied to the Rainbow Reef. The Foundation’s mangrove transplanting program focuses on restoring degraded coastal areas by planting resilient mangrove seedlings in carefully selected sites. These efforts help stabilize shorelines, improve water quality, and create critical habitat for juvenile fish species that later populate the reef. Participants gain insight into the connection between land and sea, reinforcing the understanding that reef conservation begins well beyond the dive site

CORAL CULTIVATION

Coral cultivation is a forward-looking approach to reef resilience. Through this program, the Foundation supports the propagation of healthy coral fragments in controlled environments before transplanting them onto suitable reef structures. These efforts are guided by best practices to ensure genetic diversity, proper placement, and long-term survival. While restoration is never a substitute for protection, it plays an important role in supporting recovery in areas that have experienced stress or damage. .
